Random Thought

The old general consensus in football is that a good defense stops a good offense. I don't know if I buy that. The offensive player always has the advantage over the defensive player because the offensive player knows exactly where he is going on every play. So if an offense and defense were completely equal in talent level, the offense would always get the better of the defense. Since this is the case, an NFL team should just try to build the most talented offense possible and in fact should expend most of its resources on obtaining top level offensive talent.

Couldn't the opposite point be argued equally convincingly. I'll give it a whirl...

Offense inherently has the advantage on the defense, because they know where they are going. Therefore, a defense has to be physically far superior to an offense to stop them. Since this is true, a team should spend its resources acquiring the best defensive players possible. An average offense has a leg up on most defenses anyway.

I don't really buy into either Mookie's line of reasoning or the one that I just presented. I hate to be Frankie Fence Rider, but I think a balanced approach is in order.

Tremont, I thought about that, but I was assuming that the offense is just as physically gifted as the defense.

I'm not completely buying it either, but it was just a thought.
