The Big Four

The Celtics might have their big three. Oh wow I'm really scared. I mean, I'm just shaking in my Uggs over here. Why the lack of fear for Garnett, Allen, and Pierce? Well after tonight I can declare with 7% confidence that the Knicks have a big four! Curry, Randolph, Starbury, and Crawford all scored over 20 pts in an impressive 119-112 win over the Nuggets. Who needs defense when you can score at will? Though the Knicks will still probably end up stinking at least it will be fun to watch them lose this year.

Balkman and Lee added great energy, defense and rebounding too. Nice win for the Knicks.

You two should write about this in your new book, "Desperately clinging to hope: The story of two New York Jets fans."

Whoa, whoa, whoa. I am pretty far removed from being a Jets fan. If I had to rank NFL teams that I like (which for me is a very difficult thing to do), I would put the Jets somewhere around the bottom 5-7 in the league range. Their penchant for lusting after subpar QBs they take way too early in the draft cracks me up.

My deepest apology Jimer. I can think of nothing worse than falsely being identified as a Jets fan.

What QB did the Jets take too early in the draft? Kellen Clemens was a 2nd round pick and looks like he will be pretty good. Pennington was the 18th pick of the 1st round. His run from '02 to '04 alone warranted such a pick. You have to go back to Browning Nagle in '91 to find a QB the Jets took early in the draft that didn't pan out.

Agree with Tremont. While they Jets may have made some questionable draft choices at QB (Browning Nagle, Richard Todd, and Ken O'Brien) they have not necessarily reached for those players. Nagle may have been a bit of a panic pick because the Jets had their sights set on Favre who was drafted by the Falcons two picks earlier. I do think Nagle was rated fairly highly.

As for Clemens, I don't know how you cannot be impressed with him at this point. And coming out of school Jaws liked him better than Leinart and Young. I respect Jaws' opinion more so than any other football analyst, especially now that he no longer dons those effeminate glasses.

Brooks Bollinger has prob a reach in the 5th round (I think it was the 5th), but are you really going to take them to task on that one?

What exactly has Pennington done again? Has the guy ever taken the Jets to a conference title game? Made a pro bowl? He consistently has thrown for under 200per with sig. less than a 2/1 TD to int, but that is great compared to Clemens career stats. Please don't cite some bs Pennington accuracy crap back at me either. Save it. Pennington had a great early run, but he has been far from a great NFL QB. Looking back at that draft, he was probably taken in the right position, so I do stand corrected. There was a fella named Brady taken at 199 though, and Bulger was taken in the sixth also. Jets probably could have addressed more needs with their early pick and gobbled up equal or better QB talent in the later rounds. Hindsight is 20/20 though.

As for Clemens, you can have your Oregon quarterbacks. Marcus McNeil was picked the next pick after him, and Devin Hester was 7 picks behind, and Maurice Jones Drew 9 behind. With those 3 talents left on the board was he a reach? Probably. He was the 4th QB taken. I still think Cutler and Leinart will be good pros, much better than Clemens, and they had a chance to take those two in the first yet they passed on a tackle who hasnt proved he can cut it at this level yet. I certainly do understand them needing a QB solution and not wanting to get stuck with Tavaris Jackson or Brodie Croyle though. Maybe he will be good if put in a good position to excel. You guys probably are a better judge than me on his capabilities.

You can almost always cherry pick a few guys that went after a player in a draft and say a team overdrafted a guy. By that logic EVERY team fucked up their first FIVE picks in the Tom Brady draft. Chad Pennington was clearly a top 10 QB before his injuries. A top 10 QB is worth the 18th pick in the draft. It's tough to forecast 2 separated shoulders when trying to project a player's future value. You can only go with the information available at the time. Pennington was absolutely the right pick in that spot.

And again, the early evidence seems to suggest that Kellen Clemens was well worth a 2nd round pick. Obviously he hasn't "proven" it yet. But if the NFL redid the '06 draft right now Clemens would go in the 1st.

Disagree re: Pennington ever being a top 10 qb.

Time will tell on Clemens. I remain unconvinced.

Pennington's 2002:
22 TDs 6 INTs
69% completion rate (best in league)
7.8 Yards per pass attempt (2nd in league)
104.2 QB rating (best in league)
Blow out Indianapolis in 1st round of playoffs

Name the 10 QBS who were better at the time.
